Five hours of belt examinations today at Yamaji Dojo Germany.
Today was about having the courage to step onto the mats, stand in front of your instructors and peers, and show the results of your training.
There were nerves, mistakes, determination, a few tears, and a lot of heart. That is Budo. We don’t grow by avoiding difficult moments—we grow by facing them.
One of the unexpected pleasures of my time here in Germany has been having the opportunity to personally watch these students train and perform. Seeing firsthand their dedication, character and progress has been incredibly rewarding.
A major milestone today was the promotion of Dennis, Paul and Sascha to Shodan. Earning a black belt is not the end of the journey—it represents reaching a level where a deeper journey begins.
I also have one special announcement.
During my time here, I’ve had the opportunity to see firsthand Sascha’s diligence, hard work and commitment to helping teach and guide the children of the dojo. Because of what I have personally witnessed, I have decided to recognize Sascha with the title of Sensei.
When I return home to Canada, I will prepare and send an official Yamaji Dojo Sensei certificate back to Germany to be formally presented to him.
A title should never simply come with rank. It should be earned through responsibility, character, commitment and service to others. Congratulations, Sascha Sensei. Well earned.
Congratulations to every student who stepped onto the floor today and earned their new rank, and thank you to Daniel, Ronny, the instructors and families who continue to support them.
The belt recognizes the work already done. Tomorrow, the journey continues. 山路道場 🇩🇪🇨🇦🇯🇵
