Ten years ago today on May 20, 2016, we took to home ice for the opening game of the 2016 Memorial Cup wearing jerseys paying tribute to Central Alberta’s historic military presence.

CFB Penhold was the military hub of Central Alberta, originally opening in 1940 as an Air Force base during World War II. It took on its “CFB” title in 1966 after unification of the forces and was also adjacent to the “Diefenbunker” – a now defunct and demolished Regional Emergency Government Headquarters. From 1961 to 1986, the base also housed a Radar Squadron as part of NORAD. CFB Penhold was officially decommissioned in 1994.
