🍂 That time of year is nearing…
We’re still enjoying the last bit of the season at Sherwood Forest, but with cooler temperatures arriving, it won’t be long before it’s time to start thinking about shutting down for the winter.
Before you leave your site for the season, here are a few things to put on your shutdown checklist:
🔌 Power & electrical — make sure appliances are turned off and your camper is properly disconnected from shore power when appropriate. Check your batteries and follow your camper manufacturer’s recommendations for winter storage.
🔥 Propane & furnace — check your propane supply and make sure your camper furnace and exterior vents are clear of debris, nests and obstructions before you close up for the season.
💧 Water lines — Make sure your camper’s plumbing is properly winterized. Depending on your setup, this may include draining the system and using RV antifreeze. Follow your manufacturer’s instructions.
🚿 Tanks & water heater — make sure your tanks and water heater are properly drained and prepared for winter according to your camper’s instructions.
🧹 Clean it out — remove food, garbage and anything else that could attract unwanted winter visitors.
🐭 Think like a mouse! Check for places where critters could get inside and seal up potential entry points where appropriate.
🦫 Don’t forget the beavers! If you have trees around your site that could become a winter snack, consider protecting the trunks with sturdy wire mesh. Make sure the protection is secure and leaves some room around the trunk.
🪑 Bring it in — cushions, outdoor décor, small appliances and anything else that shouldn’t spend a Saskatchewan winter outside.
🔒 Secure your site — take one final walk around before you leave and make sure everything is stored, secured and ready for winter.
📸 A little springtime hack: Take a few photos of your setup before you leave. You’ll thank yourself when you’re trying to remember where everything went next season!
