Gravel bikes what’s a gravel bike?

This image captures Honoré Barthélémy as he ascends the Galibier at Stage 11 of the 1921 Tour de France. Alone and off the front, he was the first to crest both Lautaret and the Galibier and ultimately finished 2nd on the day, won the next days stage, and finished 3rd overall at that year's Tour.

Barthélémy was a solid rider who added a great amount of color to the sport. Only a year prior he crashed very hard at Stage 8 of the Tour. Even so, he did not abandon the race. He completed the stage and eventually finished 8th at the 1920 Tour, all while riding injured being half-blind and with a broken shoulder and dislocated wrist.

He went on to race for several years, albeit with a glass eye. When the roads were dusty it irritated him greatly so he would remove the glass eye and insert cotton into the socket. A real trooper, Honoré Barthélémy continued to race until 1927.
