You don't control the horse.
You have to control you and when you can control you then the horse can figure out how to control himself!

Because of the horse, I’ve learned that true leadership isn’t about demanding—it’s about inviting. I LOVE my horse life. ~ Paula

With Christmas just around the corner, our incredible barn family and our four-legged friends had an absolute blast tackling another thrilling obstacle course! It was the perfect way to bring everyone together and soak up the festive spirit. The laughter and good mood were contagious, making it an unforgettable celebration!

We need to start showing our love for horses in a way that makes sense to them and actually feels like love TO THEM.

“Treating horses like royalty” isn’t how we make a flight animal feel like they are loved when our perception of being treated like royalty involves expensive stalls, beautiful arenas, expensive therapy treatments whilst depriving essential needs like freedom and friends.

We need to love horses properly.

We can do this by ensuring they have access to their most crucial needs.

The basics include food and water, of course. With forages like hay or grass needing to be provided with near constant access, since horses are trickle feeding foragers who will develop digestive issues like ulcers in as little as 4 hours without forage.

The basics also include the ability to exercise autonomously, having the freedom to move about and being able to do so for the majority of their day. They aren’t made to be kept in small 12x12 boxes. Doing so massively increases the risk of health issues like colic, which is the number one cause of death in horses outside of old age.

Riding isn’t a replacement for autonomous movement because the horse doesn’t have freedom of choice. It also only accounts for a very small fraction of their daily time budget. Horses are made to move ~10-20km PER DAY foraging. This is dramatically limited by excessive stalling and this is thought to be a major reason why there is such an increase in health issues like colic amongst stalled horses.

Lastly, friends. Horses are social herd animals. When given the choice, they spend almost their entirely lives in very close proximity to their horse friends and family.

They develop very strong bonds with one another and a great deal of their wellbeing comes from the social bonds they build. Mutual grooming, eating together, wandering together, napping together etc are all staples in the daily time budget for horses living in herds.

In poorly socialized horses who do not have needs adequately provided, we may see aggression towards other horses but it’s important to remember this is a byproduct of human intervention and improper care practices, not a sign that some horses like being alone. 06/28/2024

“Find a good mood in productivity. Just as nature blooms in harmony, so can our work. Take a moment to surround yourself with serenity, and watch your tasks transform into a symphony of calm focus.”
