Client Spotlight: Confidently Strong at 63

I want to kick things off today with a story that genuinely made my week. You may remember Diana, who I mentioned a few newsletters ago. She’d been training for a big family trip to Costa Rica. Lots of hiking, steps, trails, and the big one… waterfall canyoning and repelling.

Here’s what she shared with me when she got back home:

"I was recently planning a trip with my family to Costa Rica. I knew there would be trails to hike, steps to climb and adventures to be had. Specifically, a waterfall canyoning and repelling tour. Talking to Robin about it, I told him I felt that I had to up my game and improve my fitness level. So he put me on a personalized fit for the trip program. I was motivated and working hard, doing the extra workout at home and stairs at the school park when walking my dog Cooper.

One morning after doing the stairs at Robin's studio my heart rate was unusually elevated (in a good way).

“Wow” I said. “And I didn't die.” We both laughed.

I could feel myself getting stronger and by the time I left for my trip I knew I was ready. The waterfall adventure was exhilarating instead of exhausting... I conquered it. Core memory for sure. The joy on my face expresses it all. I felt confidently strong. Not bad for a 63 year old."

Stories like this matter. They’re not about perfection or optimization. They’re about being able to live your life without fear that your body will hold you back. That’s what training is all about.

Exploring the many trails within the Edmonton River Valley this week. I have perhaps underrated how nice it is within my own city limits.

Being active in the summer is a lot easier when you have nature trails close to home. If you have them take advantage.

Waiting to be “motivated” to get into better shape?

Don’t wait for motivation.

Motivation comes in waves, when it dissipates so too does your actions.

That level of inconsistency yields no results… at least no long term results.

Instead think of your journey to better health and fitness like a river

Yes a river

The river is relentlessly carving its way in the direction it needs to go.

The river sometimes is a raging rapid moving quickly yielding faster results

The river sometimes moves slowly and calmly but…

No matter how fast or slow it’s moving it is still moving in the direction it needs to go.

Let your actions and your expectations mimic the river.

Sometimes you will take massive action like a raging river

Sometimes your actions will be tempered and more docile like the calm river

Expect those fluctuations because no one can be a raging river all the time.

“Somedays you’ll do a little - Somedays you’ll do a lot, but every day do something healthy for yourself”
