What is a 'Flow' class?
In short, "flow" is simply dynamic movement in and between postures. Why do I teach this? Because full body movement helps you build integrity and structure... both on & off your mat!
โDo I have to go fast?
No. If fact, slower movement builds more strength ๐
โDo I have to do all the postures so they look "Instagram" perfect?
Noooo. I encourage you to move how it feels best for YOU - always! And, in fact, you will find me doing the same ๐
โDo I have to do everything?
No. You do you! Do what you want, when you want, in the way it feels best!
In my classes, you will always find me guiding movement of the pelvis and spine, BEFORE we do anything else. Then we find our feet and work on creating space, from our feet up! This helps create that integrity I talked about above๐, so that you can move into the rest of the practice safely ๐ (SIDE TIP: It's also just really good to be aware of how your spine and pelvis moves!)
Annnndddd... if I know we're going to be doing a certain posture, I always take the time to teach the proper engagements ahead of time, rather than just jumping into a pose (this is actually really important!)
Flow it up!
(PS- did you spot my cat? She almost got smushed! ๐ธ)

I think most of us would love to get away from the craziness of our world right now... so, I decided to teach a whole class about being on your own island ๐๏ธ๐ We had sand, sun, surfboards, no worries, fun, and happiness!
Everyone in my class on Friday was feeling a little tired, so we just did a simple, slower flow, focused on gradually building energy ๐ We started off by slowly waking up the body, creating a bit of heat, then worked our way up to standing postures.
In class the night before, we worked on inversions, by request, so this was a nice compliment to that ๐
(PS- did you know? Inversion work can be done WITHOUT going upside down! ๐ It's true! There is so much involved in an inversion, so it's important to do the prep work first, and then go there ONLY when you have built the strength & activations to get there safely)
I teach a lot of flow, so it's always fun when I get to teach a Hatha class :)
The students who attended this class, both in class & online, wanted to work on feet, spine & pelvis, so that's what we did (with a full-body focus, of course) ๐.
The theme for this class was finding space between the world around us and our responses to that world, both on & off the mat ๐ (based Pratyahara, one of the Namas & Niyamas)
So many little friends are in this video- I looove the end ๐
This is a run-through of a short sequence I submitted to for an assignment on how to buildup to an arm balance (I chose crow pose), taking all components of the pose into consideration. This was an AWESOME assignment - it really got me thinking of what and how I'm teaching!
Help me out! (for a course I'm putting together)...
Which part of your body do you find is the tightest, or doesn't move as well as you'd like? (pick all that apply)

Thanks! ๐
First class back at the studio since ... by request, we did a flow that worked on building up to Standing and/or Flying Pigeon ๐
It was weird teaching "from a distance" in the studio ... I'm used to walking around my students and only doing a fraction of the poses myself! But, since I have to keep distance AND since our classes are online as well, on my mat I stay! Very different, indeed, but it'll do!
