Our 36 year old mare Sq**rt with cushings (yes she is on meds and managed) really hates blankets but when the forecast calls for freezing rain and I worry about keeping her dry a rain sheet I hope helps… of course she has a strong opinion in the opposite - and expresses her dislike by trying to scrub it off in the snow.

Sadly Woke up with a sore throat and stuffy sinuses so had to step back from facilitating today for a group of students but looking forward to feeling better soon and spending some time with my horses. I am seeing so much great research in equine assisted programming. Here is one for Altzheimers and EAL

Thank you Lord for this blessing of rain to fill our wells and nourish our crops. For those who turn on taps and take the water that flows from them for granted I hope you can step back and appreciate the blessing this rain is to our crops and our animals and our farmers. I think of those who went before us without modern amenities and can imagine their joy when the rains came after a drought. Our lands have been parched and our spirits tested… rest now in the blessings of the rain!

The summer is an amazing time on the farm… the pasture stays green when you live in a low lying area and the dry season is the only time to have our friend Marius come with his machine and clean up the paddocks, regrade the places where the winter and spring flooding caused deep ruts and to clear out the manure pile. My horses are (of course ) all older and special needs… Cushings and metabolic disease horses need to be on dry lot or wear a muzzle(good luck) NOT lush pasture so cutting the paddocks keeps it looking nice.
For the non horsey people…this means, like a diabetic person, controlling a diagnosed horses sugar intake from grasses, feed and no treats to keep Sq**rt thriving to age 36 and beyond!

Finally the sunshine is out and we have some paths carved out of the snow! Comanche is showing off his “winter weight”…. Too much time spent “loafing” in the shelter!
