Behind every new beginning is a support system.

RAP Counsellors help newcomers navigate some of their most important first milestones in Canada:
✈️ Airport arrival
🏠 Temporary and permanent housing
📄 Essential documents and benefits
🏥 Healthcare access
🏫 School and community connections
✅ Building confidence and independence

From answering questions and connecting families to resources, to helping them navigate unfamiliar systems, RAP Counsellors provide support during the critical first weeks and months and even years of settlement.

Their work helps newcomers build a strong foundation, develop confidence, and begin feeling at home in their new community.

💙 Thank you to our RAP team for helping turn new beginnings into lasting opportunities.

“I used to give to the YMCA once a year.”

Then, one day, a YMCA donor was asked a simple question: Why do you give to the Y?

They thought about what the YMCA has meant to them, the welcoming and inclusive environment, the importance of supporting newcomers, and the personal connection they and their wife found through the Stay Strong health program for cancer survivors.

“That's why I chose to become a monthly donor.”

This donor has chosen to remain anonymous, but their reason for giving is something we can all recognize: they believe in the difference the YMCA makes in our community.

You don't need to make a large gift. Choose an amount that works for you and make a difference, month after month.

Sometimes, giving back starts with simply saying yes. ❤️

When Saeed Antaru first connected with the YMCA, he was receiving a helping hand. After moving to New Brunswick, he received donated furniture through our newcomer support services and soon found himself helping deliver furniture to another family.

In March, a friend and fellow YMCA volunteer asked Saeed if he would consider volunteering. He said yes and started volunteering that very same day. Since then, Saeed has found more than a way to give his time. He’s found connection, new relationships and a stronger sense of community.

“What makes it special is having the opportunity to meet people, work as part of a team, and know that the time and effort I’m giving is making a positive difference.”

For Saeed, volunteering has been a reminder of the importance of giving back and being there for others, especially because he knows what it feels like to receive that support himself.

His message to anyone thinking about volunteering?

"Give it a try. You don’t have to have a lot of time to make a difference. Even a few hours or a small contribution can mean a lot to someone else.”

❓ Myth or fact? Let’s talk immigration.

📊 Immigrants represent about 23% of Canada's population, yet account for approximately 50% of STEM degree holders in Canada. This highlights the significant contributions newcomers make to driving innovation and addressing workforce needs across the country.

At the YMCA, we're proud to support newcomers as they build connections, share their talents, and strengthen the communities we all call home.
