Shimpokai Weekly Status Update
Judo | BJJ | Karate
Sunday, April 26th – Saturday, May 2nd

Another strong week on the mats at Shimpokai! 💥

Sunday
Women’s BJJ with Amanda – The day kicked off with a supportive and positive environment, leading into great rolls on the mats.
Karate with Mike – Momentum continues to build with an excellent student-to-instructor ratio and focused training. Mike and Kevin also represented Shimpokai Karate at the ICKF Clinic in New Glasgow on Saturday and immediately brought those learnings back into Sunday’s class in Saint John.

Monday
BJJ with Pat & Katie – Another awesome session. The class began with a focused warm-up, followed by a recap from the previous week. Training moved into single-leg takedowns, transitioning into side control.

Tuesday
Judo with Robert – Strong focus on fundamentals, particularly ukemi (breakfalls) and gripping.
Junior Judo with Wes & Marcus – A fun and energetic class, starting with recognition of our junior competitors for their strong performance at the latest tournament.

Wednesday
BJJ with Pat & Katie – Great warm-up and technical session, setting the stage for Friday’s open roll.
Special thanks to Katie for her continued support coaching John and Mike on their kata journey. Her attention to detail and timing has been invaluable—an excellent example of how BJJ and Judo complement each other.

Thursday
Junior Judo with Wes & Marcus – Strong focus on developing fundamental skills through high repetition and technical application on the mats.

Senior Judo with John – Began with a groundwork-focused warm-up. The main focus was sankaku (triangle techniques). In Judo, sankaku refers to using the legs to form a triangle for control or submission.
John focused on two key variations:

Sankaku-jime (triangle choke) – A blood choke applied using the legs.
Sankaku-gatame (triangle hold) – A control/pinning position used to secure an osaekomi (hold-down).

Friday
BJJ Open Roll with Pat & Katie – Open rolls continue to build momentum this quarter. With a wide variety of skill levels from across the city, it created a great atmosphere and strong rounds for everyone.

Saturday
Adult Judo with Drew & Robert – Another high-energy session. An excellent black belt-to-student ratio made for a very educational class.

Announcements

The Saturday Adult Judo class will wrap up for the season on May 16th. We’re already looking forward to kicking things off again next season.
Shimpokai will be well represented at Nationals, with John and Mike heading out Tuesday—best of luck! 🇨🇦
