On Friday May 1st, Assiniboine elder and knowledge keeper Tim Eashappie joined the Huskies at South Corman Park School to speak with Grade 4, 5 and 6 students about the importance of May 5th, the National Day for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, also known as Red Dress Day.
After Tim spoke with students about what this day means for Indigenous women, girls, their loved ones, families and communities, students and Huskie athletes coloured and decorated their own red dresses.
These dresses are now on display at Merlis Belsher Place and will remain so until the end of May as a symbol of support and solidarity with Indigenous communities.
A special thank you to Tim for his time, wisdom and generosity in bringing this important conversation to the next generation through fostering kindness, empathy and understanding.
To Indigenous student-athletes Paige Rolles and Jessamy Sundby from USask Huskie Track & Field & Cross Country - thank you for time, commitment and mentorship.
To the USask Office of Vice-Provost Indigenous Engagement, thank you for your ongoing support, feedback and guidance.
The Huskies stand with the families and communities mourning the loss of loved ones, as well as those still waiting, hoping and searching for answers.
You are in our hearts. Never forgotten. No more stolen sisters♥️💚

“As an academic, a police officer and a First Nations woman, I believe that when education becomes systemic, reconciliation becomes sustainable.”
As the daughter of a Sixties Scoop Survivor and granddaughter of a Residential School Survivor, Shaina Lynden knows first hand the devastating impact of colonial policies on Indigenous families, communities and culture.
As a police officer, she also knows what it’s like to be on the frontlines of difficult and traumatic situations.
This unique perspective and a passion for education has led Lynden to create, build and facilitate one of the most comprehensive and successful Indigenous Cultural Competency Education Courses for policing in the country.
Currently completing her PhD in Educational Leadership at University of Saskatchewan, Lynden ultimately hopes to see national standards deployed for reconciliation in policing and public service that answer the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Call to Action 57.
“I think that’s part of what’s so successful about me doing what I’m doing, is because I speak from being a police officer and I speak from being a First Nations person.”
