A little TBT-Throwback Thursday to where it all began. 🩷🐉
In 1996, Dr. Don McKenzie and a small group of courageous women in Vancouver launched Abreast in a Boat—the first breast cancer survivor dragon boat team. What began with one boat has grown into an incredible worldwide community built on strength, connection, hope, and the joy of paddling together.
And Busting With Energy is proud to be part of that history.
Just two years later, in 1998, our own team began paddling here in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Today, more than 28 years after the movement began, BCS paddlers from around the world continue to come together on the water, carrying forward the spirit that started it all.
This video from Abreast in a Boat is a beautiful reminder of our roots, how far BCS dragon boating has come, and the legacy our team is proud to continue.
What an amazing journey it has been—and what an incredible journey it continues to be.
From one boat in 1996 to a worldwide sisterhood. 🩷

Our time at the Dragon Boat Festival in Aix-les-Bains was truly something special. 🇫🇷
We came together as a team, but left with so much more — new friendships, beautiful memories, countless laughs, and moments we will carry with us for a long time.
Meeting so many wonderful people from different places and sharing the passion, spirit, and joy of dragon boating was an experience we’ll never forget. There is something incredibly special about being surrounded by people who come together with such energy, kindness, and a love for the sport.
And to our amazing team — thank you for making this experience so unforgettable. The laughter, encouragement, teamwork, and friendship made every moment that much more meaningful. ❤️
We may have travelled to Aix-les-Bains to race, but we came home with memories, friendships, and a bond that goes far beyond the finish line.
So grateful for this team, this adventure, and all the wonderful people who made it so special. 🐉❤️🚣♀️
Until the next adventure… together, we are stronger. 💕
