Muscle fibre grows in response to repeated bouts of resistance training. The resistance can be body weight in yoga or dance, bands and pulleys, or barbells and dumbbells. Diastasis Recti is when the linear alba ligament in the abdomen stretches and separates the ab muscles to make room for a growing baby. After childbirth, that separation may last for months or years. When a person flexes their abs, they might notice a bulge or doming of the belly.
Diastasis Recti is correlated with incontinence and low back pain but might not be a direct cause.
However, exercise can help. Particularly exercises that strengthen the deep core muscles. Unfortunately, tradition ab exercises can bring discomfort or risk injury.
