The Casque Isles section honoured their longtime volunteer Dan McGrath over the weekend. With help from a contribution agreement with Trans Canada Trail, a set of blue Adirondack chairs was purchased and installed at the Picnic Table Lookout on the Mount Gwynne Segment.
Matt Borutski represented both the Casque Isles Hiking Trail and the VTA in thanking Dan for his many years of volunteering on the VT, and for his family which graciously allows the trail to cross their property.

It is surprising with the amount of snow that we had this year, but the bush is very dry. This means that caution must taken with fires and smoking materials. Please remember that you are responsible to tend to any fire that you light, and stop on a flat piece of rock if you smoke. Make sure that all embers are out.
The Municipality of Huron Shores Fire Dept has declared a Restricted Fire Zone as well. Consult their page for updated information.

We will have a more extensive report later this week, but this past weekend was considered a resounding success by everyone who attended. There were VTA members from SSM, Hamilton, Timmins and Schreiber travelling to Wawa to help clear the trails of the Michipicoten Voyageur Club.
A quick bit of reckoning put us at around 200 person hours of walking and chainsaw and lopper work on the trails south of town. We are really grateful for the response from the residents of Wawa, led by the indomitable Shirley Hale. These folks have a true passion for enjoying the trails and connecting with nature. Thank you all for your enthusiasm!
A special thank you to Alex Patterson from the Township of Wawa for help in coordinating the event. And to David, Rupert and all of the crew at Naturally Superior Adventures, thank you for your continued support and partnership with the VTA. You went over and above at making us feel welcome and giving us a place to rest at the end of the day.
And one last thank you to Trans Canada Trail, who provided us with a grant that enabled this work weekend to happen. You continue to be a fantastic partner for trail clubs across the country, and we made sure to educate the residents of Wawa of the benefits of having you as a partner as well.
We are all back home and it is safe to say that everyone slept soundly last night. If you love hiking in some rugged conditions with spectacular views of Lake Superior, we can assure you that Wawa has what you are looking for.
