THE REP NOBODY SEES
Near the end of class, when everybody is tired, we do a last set. When the instructor is watching one side of the room, it is genuinely easy to do the lazy version on the other side. Nobody would know.
Except you would.
Character is not built in the moments people are watching. It is built in that last rep, the one where the only person keeping the standard is you. Do it properly enough times and something changes in how you carry yourself, in the dojo and outside of it.
This is why we do not hand out belts on a schedule. A belt is a statement that the work was actually done, and it means nothing if it was given for showing up. Students grade when they are ready. Some take longer. That is the point.
Parents ask what karate does for a child. This is the honest answer. Not that they learn to defend themselves, though they do. That they learn what it feels like to hold themselves accountable to something when nobody is checking.
Build Character is the fourth of our five capacities.
