Alaska harvests millions of Canadian ( Skeena) salmon and the total bycatch on Steelhead is unknown and unaccountable. In 2021, SSEAK (Districts 101-106) commercial fisheries caught over 50,000 Chinook, over 1.2 million chum, ~540,000 coho, 34 million pink, and ~800,000 sockeye.
Alaska is not required to report or record any steelhead bycatch. With run timing similar to sockeye it is estimated the impacts of the Alaska fishery to Skeena run Steelhead is likely very high. You can read the full report for more information.
