The “dinosaur” HVAC system in the NESA facility actually began its life at Chandler Park Middle School before being moved to our building in 2005. While its exact age is a bit of a mystery, one thing is certain - it’s no longer meeting modern efficiency, air-quality, or programming needs.

Good news… we’re listening!

As part of the NESA Expansion Project (Phase 2), the entire HVAC system will be replaced with a modern, energy-efficient system in 2026, improving comfort, air quality, and sustainability for everyone who uses the facility.

We’re thrilled to announce that PHASE TWO of the NESA Expansion Project is FULLY FUNDED and scheduled for completion in 2026!

This phase will significantly enhance our facility by:
✨ Adding 900 sq. ft. of new multipurpose programming space through second-level renovations
🔥 Upgrading fire code safety with four new exits and an external staircase.
♿ Installing an accessible lift to better serve seniors and participants with diverse needs
🌬️ Replacing the entire HVAC system to improve air quality and energy efficiency throughout the building

Exciting news from NESA! We’re moving ahead with Phase Two of our facility upgrades: a brand-new multi-purpose studio on the second floor. This space will give us the room to grow our dance and fitness programs and offer a flexible meeting area for the whole community to enjoy.

Phase Two is made possible thanks to funding from the Northern Development Initiative Trust Community Development - Recreation Infrastructure Grant, along with NESA’s own targeted funds from operational revenues. Construction is tentatively planned to start in December 2025, pending building permit approval. We can’t wait to share this new space with you!

In 2024, NESA completed Phase One of the Northern Edge Sport Association Expansion Project. This phase included preliminary architectural drawings, 3D renderings, and initial engineering assessments for structural, civil, electrical, mechanical, and geotechnical work. The total cost for Phase One was $146,568, funded through a combination of community corporate sponsorships and NESA’s operational revenues.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to our generous community sponsors—Silver King Helicopters, Peace Hills Insurance Company, and Bulkley Valley Insurance Services. This phase of the project would not have been possible without their support.

Did you know..
In 2020, NESA invested $167,000 in major capital upgrades to the Northern Edge Sport & Recreation Centre through grants and fundraising.
Through the Envelope Upgrade Project and the Building Revitalization Project, NESA replaced all windows and doors, added new siding and insulation, external safety lighting, and created several new spaces including a second-level studio, a birthday party room, a boot room, a utility room, and an expanded lobby.
Interior improvements included new flooring and fresh paint throughout, updated lighting, and upgraded plumbing and electrical systems. These investments helped modernize the facility and improve the experience for everyone who walks through our doors.

The new expansion will include an indoor walking track — the first of its kind in our region?

This track will give our community a safe, accessible, year-round space to stay active, especially during long Northern winters. It’s designed for all ages and abilities, offering a warm, reliable place for daily movement, rehabilitation, and low-impact exercise.
