ššŗBelly dance culture is a dynamic and often contradictory space: it is both a deeply traditional folk heritage and a constantly innovating modern art; it is a source of female empowerment and a subject of social stigma; it is a global community grappling with the ethics of cross-cultural exchange. To understand it is to appreciate its rich history, its sophisticated movement vocabulary, and the passionate, diverse community that keeps it alive.

Belly danceā-roots are ancient but not a single, unbroken lineage. While ancient Egyptian tomb paintings (circa 1400 BCE) depict movements that resemble modern belly danceāsuch as postures with extended arms and tilted hipsāthere is no direct evidence that those ancient dances are the direct ancestor. The modern dance is more accurately a product of centuries of cultural fusion in the Middle East, blending folkloric dances from regions spanning North Africa to Central Asia, influenced by Ottoman, Romani (often mistakenly called āGypsyā), and various local traditions.
