425 years ago today, October 7, 1600

On this day in 1600, Ieyasu departed Edo Castle with an entourage of 30,000 men. On the same day his son, Hidetada, arrived at Karuizawa in modern-day Nagano Prefecture, on his way to battle the Uesugi. Neither would have known that exactly two weeks later, the greatest, most decisive battle in samurai history was about to take place.
