Ableism is a form of discrimination against those who are not able-bodied or have physical disabilities. Many older adults experience this form of discrimination as they begin to develop age-related diseases such as arthritis and hearing loss. Here at HEAL, we aim to challenge and fight ableism with our free physical activity classes catered to older adults and those with physical disabilities. According to the CDC, it is recommended for adults aged 65+ to perform moderate-intensity aerobic exercises for at least 150 minutes a week. Examples of exercises of this type include briskly walking or biking with minimum hills. It is also recommended to perform muscle-strengthening exercises twice or more a week, along with balancing exercises three days a week for optimal health benefits. Osteoporosis is a challenging bone disease which leads to the weakening of bones as we age. However, according to Healthline, combining other methods of treatments with exercises that target strength building helps your muscles push and pull against your bones, leading to the forming of new bone tissue, and therefore increasing bone strength and alleviating symptoms.
