29 years ago today, UFC 1 took place on Nov. 12, 1993 in front of 7,800 people at McNichols Sports Arena. It was an eight-man tournament with no weight classes and two simple rules: No eye-gouging and no biting. Participants of different fighting backgrounds entered to see what style was best.

Royce Gracie — a 6-foot, 175-pound fighter in a full gi — ran through the competition, taking out boxer Art Jimmerson (two minutes, 18 seconds), Ken Shamrock (57 seconds) and Gerard Gordeau (1:40) — all by submission — to win the competition and its $50,000 prize.
