There’s a part of me that just wants everything to be easy and predictable.
I call it my good girl.
She’s the part of me that knows how to work hard, follow the rules, do what the teacher says and in exchange, she expects to get good grades.
And it’s a pattern that served me well for a loooong time earning me honour role placements, scholarships and even for a short period a 4.0 GPA.
But as soon as that little good girl entered the real world she struggled.
Because the real world doesn’t work that way. At least it doesn’t anymore. There is no sure-fire path to job security, predictable successes and easy As.
It’s a complex world out there and no one really knows what the future holds.
What most of us need is a whole new skillset
- Resiliency in the face of adversity
- Calm in the face of chaos
- Commitment even when things feel futile
You need a big, inspiring vision that pulls you out of bed each day and the determination to keep going even when you don’t get the rewards you’re expecting.
It requires saying yes to your own personal development and developing the self-compassion, self-awareness and self-mastery you need to hold yourself in the beautiful messiness of change along the way.
I believe each of us is being called into our own version of this hero’s journey.
It might show up for you as an idea, an inspiration, a calling, a whisper.
It really doesn’t really matter. All that matters is that you take the first step.
Say no to this path and the biggest loss is not the money or fame or accomplishment, but the loss of who you could have become.
Because your goals and dreams are not only about the change you create. They are about the change they create in you.
