“Don’t cry because it’s over, be happy because it happened”
This has been on the mirror at SCULLHOUSE this week as we have wrapped up our last in-studio classes. Unfortunately, we have not been able to recover following our pandemic closure and have had to make the incredibly difficult decision to close our studio. While this is a sad time, I am choosing to focus not on what I am losing, but what I have gained.
More than the classes or the over 10 million meters I’ve personally rowed, through SCULLHOUSE I’ve gained confidence both personally and professionally, I’ve gained strength, both physically and emotionally, and I’ve gained friendships I know I will cherish for a lifetime.
SCULLHOUSE has taught me what it feels like to be part of a community. It has taught me that it is ok to ask for help, and that sometimes vulnerability can be a strength. You have taught me that in many ways, community is like a big family, and like family, we are there for one another encouraging each other’s successes, and sharing the weight of challenges together. This community has shown me that while hard things are always possible, they are easier and more fun when we tackle them together.
This community wouldn’t exist without each of you. Being part of this community has been a gift, and one I will never forget. Thank you all.
While the studio has closed, the memories will live on, the friendships will continue, and I know I will see many of you on the screen for our online rowing classes.
Until we meet again.

Wondering what our Tabata class is all about?
Developed by Dr. Izumi Tabata, Tabata training is a type of HIIT (high intensity interval training) training that is proven to increase anaerobic and aerobic performance more than longer duration moderate intensity exercise.
Tabata involves 8 rounds of your most intense effort for 20 seconds, followed by 10 seconds of rest.
At SCULLHOUSE, our Tabata is a combination of rowing and mat exercises.
We do a progression on the erg (rower), followed by 8-10 minutes of rowing with hard strokes to warm up.
Following the warm up, you have 4 rounds of Tabata. Rounds 1 & 4 are on the erg, rounds 2 & 3 are on the mat.
Class is 45 minutes and flies by!! Check it out - every Friday morning at 7 am with coach Kristin.

Spending time in nature has been proven to reduce stress hormone production, resulting in improved feelings of happiness, lower heart rates, blood pressure, boost the immune system, and accelerate recovery from illness. According to Time magazine, even a two-hour "forest bath" can have significant benefits to your health. 🌲 🌳 🌲 So get out to the Scarborough Bluffs or the Don Valley and take in the smells, sights, and sounds!

Most adults require between seven and nine hours of nightly sleep. According to , we are in the midst of a sleep deprivation crisis. Only 35% of adults in North America get enough sleep. SLEEP IS ESSENTIAL. When you sleep, your body repairs cells, restores energy, and releases important hormones and proteins. Your brain stores new information and gets rid of the unnecessary stuff. At the end of the day, it all comes down to sleep!

A 20-second hug 🤗 has the power to decrease cortisol, reduce blood pressure, boost oxytocin levels and strengthen the immune system. Seriously? The immune system? Yes! The pressure on your sternum can stimulate the thymus gland which regulates and balances the body's production of white blood cells. 💪 Elevated oxytocin levels in the body can help lower anxiety and relax muscles.
In a nutshell, hug someone, and hug them long!

Giving thanks 🙏 can make you happier. Researchers have tied gratitude to optimism, higher levels of exercise, improved relationships, and fewer visits to the doctor.
How can we cultivate gratitude? Write a thank-you note, thank someone, keep a gratitude journal, meditate, use your daily language to incorporate gratitude. These small shifts in our thinking can have powerful and lasting impacts on our brains and bodies!
