The D1 Columbia Women’s Tennis team begins their regular season on Sunday January 20 with an away game at Syracuse. You can catch their first home game on Friday January 25 vs. Rhode Island at the Dick Savitt Tennis Center. Following a 12-8 record in the 2017-2018 season, the team is looking to make moves this season. Follow them at

The USTA National Tennis Center in Queens is named for Billie Jean King. Billie Jean King won 39 Grand Slam titles, including 12 in singles. In addition, she has been an advocate for social justice, and was the founder of the Women’s Tennis Association and Women’s Sports Foundation. Billie maintains a residence in NYC.

One of the most centrally located indoor tennis locations in Manhattan is the Midtown Tennis Club, located on 8th Ave between 26th and 27th Streets. Rates range from $90 to $150 per hour. However, expect a shockingly shallow distance between the baseline and wall, and similar constraints between the doubles line and the nets.

Hailing from Oakland, California, Sarah Hu is a senior on the D1 Columbia University’s women’s tennis team. Sarah plays singles and doubles, and was the No. 1 ranked high school player coming out of Northern California.

17-time Grand Slam champion and 2-time Olympic Gold Medalist Gigi Fernandez is the coach of New York Empire, a World TeamTennis team. The NY Empire team plays at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens.

David Dinkins, mayor of NYC from 1990-1993, has been one of the greatest fans and advocates for tennis in the city. Currently 91, Mayor Dinkins has served on the USTA board, helped to reroute planes around the US Open, and was the inspiration for the David Dinkins Tennis Club, which provides free tennis lessons to children at Frederick Johnson Park.

The Brian Watkins Tennis Center at East River Park is located along the East River immediately north of the Williamsburg bridge. 12 hard courts in decent condition. Courts noisy due to traffic on FDR and Williamsburg Bridge. Closest subway is Delancey Street; it’s about a 17 minute walk from the station. More information @ 10s.nyc⠀
