I finished The Forty Rules of Love by Elif Shafak last night.
It arrived in my hands at exactly the right time.
As I sit beside a loved one whose life is slowly fading, I find myself reflecting on how much of life is beyond our control. We cannot stop time. We cannot bargain with illness. We cannot hold on forever to the people we love.
And yet, love remains.
Not the romanticized version of love that promises happiness and certainty, but the deeper kind that asks us to stay present in the face of impermanence. The kind that softens us, breaks us open, and reminds us what truly matters.
One of the things I loved most about this book is that it is not really about romance. It is about transformation. It is about the courage to love despite loss, despite disappointment, despite knowing that everything in this life is temporary.
In a world obsessed with achievement, certainty, and control, this book gently whispers a different truth: that the heart has wisdom of its own.
Perhaps that is why it resonated so deeply with me.
As I witness the fragility of life up close, I am reminded that love is not measured by how long we have someone, but by how fully we are willing to show up while they are here.
Some books entertain us.
Some books teach us.
And every so often, a book arrives that quietly sits beside us and keeps us company through a difficult chapter.
This was one of those books.
