🚨 Most people slow down at 66. Joe Barr just rode 2,448 miles across America to set a world record - and turned 67 the day after he finished.
The age-defying ultra-cyclist rolled into Navy Pier, Chicago on Friday afternoon to claim a new provisional world record for riding the length of Route 66. He'd set off from Santa Monica pier 10 days, 12 hours and three minutes earlier, crossing eight states and climbing more than 21,000 meters along the way.
Barr, a former pro road racer from Northern Ireland, slept around four hours a night and averaged over 200 miles a day, supported by a crew that included his wife, performance nutritionist Jill Mooney. The "Mother Road" hit him with extreme heat in Arizona and New Mexico, humidity through Oklahoma and Missouri, and the constant vibration of a 100-year-old road.
"In the early days it had me on the ropes but I got stronger as I adjusted to race conditions," Barr said. "To pull this off before I turned 67 years old, in the centennial year of Route 66 - I couldn't ask for more."
His details have now been passed to Guinness for ratification. Still think age slows you down?
