Ever wondered why a golf hole is sized at 4.25 inches?

While there was no consistency among sizes throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, that officially changed in 1891 when golf’s governing body, the Royal and Ancient (R&A) standardized the size of the golf hole to 4.25 inches, the size it remains today.

Of course, the powers that be at the R&A didn’t just wake up one day in 1891 and decide that every golf hole in the world should be 4.25 inches in diameter. That size had been used by some courses since 1829, when the first version of a hole-cutter was created at Musselburgh Links in Scotland. Despite the hole-cutting tool, various courses utilized various hole sizes, including some six-inch holes, throughout much of
the 1800s, until the R&A intervened.

While it was the ultimate destination golf trip with the highest of expectations, it turns out the gravity was low.

Known as "The Shot Heard Around the World," astronaut Alan Shepard became the only person to hit a golf ball on the moon during the Apollo 14 mission in February 1971.

Taking two one-handed shots because his spacesuit wouldn't allow a proper swing, later analysis determined that his golf balls travelled 24 and 40 yards, respectively.

Joking that they had gone "miles and miles," Shepard wasn't entirely wrong. With only one-sixth of Earth's gravity and virtually no atmosphere, a properly struck golf ball on the moon really could travel for miles.
