NEW BLOG POST - Training in Hawaii Waikiki Beach

I had every intention of training BJJ during our family trip to Hawaii in August. I just didn’t end up training where I originally planned.

On our first day, I was sitting by the beach when I got an Instagram message from one of my students, Teddy.

“Are you gonna go train at Marcelo Garaciaa's Gym?  I heard it's now based in Hawaii."

I was like..."Oh S%^t, I didn't know that.  I was actually thinking of another gym?!"

Teddy replied, "I think Marcelo's gym is near you.  I googled Waikiki ni relation to Marcelo Garcia Hawaii and I think it said it was only 12km or something.”

I thought to myself, god bless you, Teddy.

Cozy No-Gi BJJ class today. 🤼‍♂️

CLA in action. We started with hand fighting/underhook entry games, then moved into leg entanglements—starting in Cross Ashi with a false grip on the heel and learning how to maintain control while the defender works to safely extract.

From there, we moved into Kimura grip games, followed by 5 rounds of rolling.

Finished the night with a burnout of wrestling drills. 🔥

🏆 STUDENT OF THE MONTH – AUGUST 🏆

Congratulations to Joe Lyon, our August Student of the Month!

Joe has been incredibly consistent with his BJJ training and is the definition of a great teammate. He’s a genuinely good guy who is always looking out for the gym and the people around him.

Many of you may not know that Joe is also our building supervisor and owns Bubbles & Squeak, the commercial cleaning company that keeps Legacy clean twice a week. But what really stands out about Joe is how often he goes above and beyond what’s expected of him.

A perfect example happened during one of the huge rainstorms we had. Knowing we’d experienced leaks in the past, Joe took it upon himself to head to the gym late at night, during his own time, just to make sure everything was okay.

It wasn’t.

He found water leaking into the gym and was able to deal with the situation before it turned into potentially major damage.

Well deserved. Congratulations, Joe! 👊🥋
