Soccer Captains & Players - An Offsides Plea:

This season the offsides rule was eliminated as a covid prevention measure, but also due to it being a source of contention & conflict over the years. From what I understand they won't be reverting.

I run 3 teams and up to now, the majority of opponents we've come across are still trying to play something resembling proper football, and not abusing the offsides rule. But there have been a few cases where this is the clear main strategy - posting people up by the corner flag or being several carlengths behind the defense. And the occurrence is increasing.

Look, I get it if you're chasing a draw. But to do this from the get-go and still do it when ahead is just detrimental to the whole UR community. We all signed up to play football, not longball. And as more teams use this strategy, others will feel they'll be 'forced' to do the same to remain competitive.

Before you know it, team shapes won't exist anymore, the midfield will be bypassed every time & we'll be playing a completely different game more resembling oldschool route 1 football. I think we can all agree it's more fun to play as a team, with beautiful passing combinations & being inclusive of all your teammates.

If you are ABUSING the OFFSIDES rule, PLEASE STOP.

By all means play long balls if that's your cup of tea, but the rule change was meant to minimize contact & conflict, not change the nature & strategy of the game.
