Sleeping in a tent especially with a broken air mattress isn’t ideal for recovery.
While you sleep, your body releases growth hormone. That’s what actually repairs the muscle you broke down during your hike, or your strength training session. Cut your sleep short and you get less GH and therefore less recovery or muscle growth.
If you are constantly putting in a solid effort in the gym or on your adventures and feel like you are not seeing results or feeling constantly sore one of the fist things to look at would be your sleep.

Training is the stimulus. Recovery is where the results show up.
From ice baths and saunas to sleep and stress management, to the food you eat it all plays a role.
In order to progress you must be able to recover appropriately!

Has Your New Year fitness motivation disappeared already? Now what?
Two weeks in and the New Year resolution energy is fading. That’s normal. Here’s are a few things that can help you keep those resolutions going strong for longer!
Lower the bar. Trying to go from 0 to 100 real quick and starting the year with aiming to do 5-6 workouts a week? Those great ambitions get hit with a bit of the reality of life so try scheduling a solid 2-3 sessions instead!
Schedule it like a meeting. Motivation is unreliable. Calendar invites aren’t. Block the time, show up for yourself, let momentum do the rest.
Change one variable. New playlist. Different time of day. Try a group class instead of solo. Seek training advice. Small change, fresh feeling.
Remember why you started. Not the vague ‘get in shape’ goal. The real reason. Playing with your kids without getting tired. Skiing all day without your legs giving out. Whatever made you walk in the door the first time.
Just start by doing 30 minutes. Tell yourself you’ll work out for 30 minutes instead of scrolling TikTok. It will into longer and you’ll feel great afterwards.
Motivation comes and goes. Systems stay. Build the system that keeps you coming back!

Coast Athletics Takes on the West Coast Trail 2025 Part 3-Final Leg🌲🌊
The last two days heading from South to North are some of the “easier” hiking on the WCT.
Day 5 (11km) -we started at Tsusiat Falls with a relaxing two coffee, watching a bear climb a ladder morning before heading out for our stroll to Darling Creek campsite. There is the largest cable car crossing where 8 years ago I dropped my polls in the middle and had to go diving in to retrieve. I only managed to rescue one of them. But this time I was smart and actually strapped them to my bag! Once getting to Darling we showered at the cold waterfall before having our finest of bagged meals before our last day!
Day 6(14km) - Darling to Pachena. The last trek of our journey. As you can tell by the lack of photos we were just pushing to get to the end with blisters and nearing the end of our snack supply. The shuttle home was calling. We stopped to see the sea lion colony out on the rocks and strolled through the forest before our last beach walk to the finish line. We checked out from the office and got on our bumpy shuttle ride home.
Thanks for following along with our journey. If you are keen to do the trail let us know how we can help!

Coast Athletics takes on the West Coast Trail 2025-Part 2🌲🌊
Day 3-Culite to Cribs- 16km. From a steep ladder section to kickstart the day, to boardwalks through low nitrogen bogs, to beach slogs and sea lions in the distance. We made it to Cribs campground to enjoy a Top 5/ maybe even top 3 sunset! (Hence the sunset spam)
Day 4- Cribs to Tsusiat Falls-17km. The morning started off with a little sprinkle/ocean mist so we packed up quick and headed out on the ocean shelf and beach before heading back inland for a finally easier trail section. We made it to the Crabshack with only a little slip and got well nourished before getting shuttled across the narrows with the local boat dog. This led into our last hard forest section before reaching our final destination for the night of Tsusiat falls where we were in need of a friendly neighbours roller to roll out some muscles.

Taking Coast Athletics to the West Coast Trail 2025 Part 1
Day 1- From an early morning ferry to reorganizing bags we hiked the hard first 6km from Gordon River to Thrasher Cove. Trail was filled with technical sections, the highest elevation of the trail and lots of ladders with a few rungs missing.
Day 2- Thrasher Cove to Cullite 11km - we woke up bright and early to catch the tides to undertake Owen Point. It’s filled with larger boulders, slippery rocks and large driftwood trees. The most challenging part of the trail where two people had to get medical evacuated from Thrasher cove campground the day we were there. We took our time and made it through safely, walked along the shelf afterwards before re-entering the forest to more ladders, mud and slippery roots all before descending down to Cullite Campground for the night!
