Another impressive Club Championship weekend is in the books at Shaughnessy.

The 2026 Club Championships brought together exceptional golf, fierce competition, and plenty of camaraderie.

Congratulations to our 2026 Club Champions and to all of the finalists who competed.

Thank you to everyone who came out to cheer on the players and be part of the action. Your support and enthusiasm helped create a memorable atmosphere around the Club.

A special thank you as well to our Course & Grounds crew for having the course in pristine condition, and to all of the staff and volunteers who worked behind the scenes to make the Championships possible.

Fifteen years ago today, Shaughnessy hosted the 2011 RBC Canadian Open. Coinciding with the club's centennial anniversary, the championship tested the field on our classic A.V. Macan layout.

Our course provided one of the toughest scoring tests on the PGA Tour that season. The layout left a lasting impression on the field, with tour player Robert Garrigus remarking during the tournament that, "If you miss the fairway by six inches, you are in deep trouble."

Sean O'Hair went on to capture the title in a playoff with a winning score of just four-under par. The week was also highlighted by local favourite Adam Hadwin, who entered the final round just one shot off the lead before finishing tied for fourth.

One of the most anticipated transformations at the club just wrapped up: our cactus garden behind the clubhouse is back and looking spectacular!

The process took a full week from start to finish. Every cactus and succulent that spent the winter tucked away in our greenhouse was carefully moved out and repositioned, piece by piece, until the garden was completely filled in.
This year's design features over a dozen varieties of cactus and succulents, plus nearly 1,600 individual Alternanthera plants filling in the border and gaps.

Throughout the season, you'll see the Alternanthera border kept crisp and manicured to frame the garden beautifully, while the plants toward the back are being left to grow freely, they'll be used as cutting stock this fall.

Canada Day has long marked the unofficial start of summer at Shaughnessy, and this year's celebration was another memorable one. 660 members and guests came together for the Annual Canada Day Pancake Breakfast, making it one of the Club's largest and most successful events to date. Thanks to the generosity of those who registered, we also raised $6,600 in meaningful funds for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank, with all registration fees collected going directly to support an important cause. Thank you to everyone who attended, and to our Board of Directors, volunteers, and staff who helped make the morning such a success.

Over the last few weeks, we have gradually been filling in all our annual beds with our summer displays. The timing on these plantings is always based on weather, plant readiness, and labour considerations, though this year we managed to get some areas done historically early and are off to a great start. These plants will mature, and beds will fill in over the next month, with many things looking their best by late July. Most plantings will continue to bloom and look good right up until the cold weather comes in the fall.

Every year we always try to find the perfect balance between sticking with what works and trying out something new. Many areas have specific cultural requirements: full sun or shade, dry and difficult-to-water areas, big and small spaces, and several other considerations. For these reasons, some areas don’t change much year to year, but we always try to mix things up as much as we can.

Many classic favourites will be returning, like our Shaughnessy geraniums that have been grown from continuous cuttings for more than 50 years, looking as good as ever. We are also excited about some new varieties we grew from seed, such as Celosia ‘Fresh Look’, Salvia ‘Mojave Red’ and Ageratum ‘Aloha Blue’. Some of our centrepieces like our Plumbago standards are over 50 years old, while some plants like King Tut Papyrus were grown fresh this year.

Planting is always a very labour-intensive process for the team. In the preceding weeks we removed all the finished bulbs from the beds in preparation. All beds are dug by hand to a shovel’s depth to turn over the soil. This process moves the w**d seeds that are on the surface to the lower layers of the soil where they will hopefully not survive to germinate. It also loosens everything up to make it workable for when all the annuals are planted by hand. We spend a good amount of time getting the grade ready before we put down some fertilizer, lay out the plants and plug everything in. Grading is an important step since the soil is the canvas in which we present our displays. Lastly, we water everything in we plant to remove air pockets.

In the greenhouse this month, it is almost empty! Only the cactus and a few remaining things are left inside the glasshouse and will hopefully be moved out by the start of July. The plastic house still has a few tables of alternantheras, and there are a lot of plants outside on tables as well, but every week more goes in the ground until all we are left with is stock plants and a few extras for replacements.

On April 15th, eight staff members of our culinary team developed and presented their own signature chicken burger at the inaugural Burger War. It was a great opportunity to showcase individual style, encourage collaboration, and bring some fun, competitive spirit into the kitchen. Five judges voted for the best burger, and the winner’s burger from the competition is being offered to members as one of the May features.

Spring Aeration was successfully completed on Friday, April 24th. The timing was ideal, and the turf is already showing excellent signs of recovery. This essential work is the foundation of our season, ensuring the root zones are healthy and ready to withstand the demands of the summer months ahead.
