Speaking Up and Self-Advocating with Sabahat Naureen - Up for Change! 10/30/2020

One thing I really encourage people to do, is to stand up and speak up.

Speaking up when you are treated unfairly, speaking up when you see something inappropriate, standing up for your ideas and values..

Believing in your WORTH and speaking up in life, business and career have tremendous far-reaching benefits. And it is a learned skill.

I was recently a guest on the podcast 'Up for Change', where we talk about Self-Advocacy and Speaking Up.

Give it a listen, lots of valuable gems on there!

Speaking Up and Self-Advocating with Sabahat Naureen - Up for Change! In light of the race-centric brutality happening in the world today...

Its not enough to share stories on social media and use hashtags to show awareness. It is something, but it is NOT enough.

It is time to SPEAK UP in real life - against the oppressed and the marginalized and the ones suffering injustice and abuse. Whether it is in the US, in Bangladesh or in Syria.

Actually, the time to speak up was years ago. The second best time is now.

The only way you can be an ally and not a bystander, is to actively use YOUR VOICE. Question norms, question complacency, question ignorance and vocally speak out - matter how uncomfortable it makes you.

Because chances are, your discomfort is extremely mild compared to what racially and systematically oppressed people have experienced and continue to experience.

Times are uncertain right now. Businesses are changing the way they operate. This affects the way you do your job and the way you lead.

The best way to crisis-proof yourself, your business and your career - is to build your resiliency in the meantime. Yes, technical skills are important. But your resiliency will see you through the tough times.

How can you do that?

1. Manage your thoughts
2. Create a Values-based 'Code of Conduct'.
3. Double down on your strengths
4. Nurture a tendency towards action

What else are you doing to build resiliency in yourself, your business and career?

I was listening to a podcast the other day and discovered Dr Townsend of Townsend Leadership .

He mentioned the concept of having a 'LIFE TEAM', which was very interesting.

He said that as a leader, we give and give. But do we have people we can call and say "hey I have a real challenge right now, and would love to just talk about it"?

Having people you can talk to about your challenges is like having a huge weight lift off your shoulders, resulting in more clarity. Priceless.

And the kicker is, if you dont have this, you might not be producing resuts that are true to your potential.

Ouch.

(Traditionally men have a harder time with this than women do. And I have to admit, I may be more like men on this one.)

What about you - do you have a 'life team'?
