Strum is a Paul Bieker designed long course racing sailboat with comfortable cruising accommodations. Below is Strum's 2026 racing schedule. Jun06 SIN (VIRS-5)?
Riptide50Strum is a Racing Team for the purpose of crew & family communications for the Riptide50 Strum racing/cruising sailboat from Vancouver, BC Canada. Strum was designed by Paul Bieker (Seattle) & custom built in full carbon fibre by Ian Franklin (New Zealand). She sports a modular interior, 3,000lbs of water ballast, a 12' lifting keel and a 13' articulating sprit, exceeding 12 knots under p
ower & 30 knots under sail. New for 2026 is Strum hanging around her home port of Vancouver over the summer (FIFA vs extended PNW cruising). This will allow Strum to compete in more local events, like the VARC (Vancouver Area Racing Circuit) Spring, Summer & Fall Series (skipper is VARC Div-0 rep), VIRS (Vancouver Island Racing Series) events and our home port Royal Vancouver Yacht Club (RVYC) Wednesday Evening Series (WES) long course, plus the odd day sail/fireworks night. Strum continually recruits new crew that can commit to one or more of the above Series, as well as capable crew interested in individual regattas. If you, or someone you know, is interested in racing on Strum, please select GOING to the 3 posted Facebook /Event Series (VARC, VIRS & WES), message us here or contact the skipper directly. Are you (or someone you know) interested in crewing on Strum? All regattas will be publicly posted to /Events here: RSVP GOING to be considered for crew or INTERESTED if you cannot commit. Regular/confirmed crew can convert to INTERESTED as needed, to update ALL crew immediately. Invitation & preference is given to reliable, regular crew who can race hard, be compatible with core-crew and assist in delivering, moving, practicing & preparing Strum for battle (apply within). Final confirmed-crew selection is typically announced at the regatta or week prior to /Event. Regatta details, including transportation, eating, sleeping, signals & time limits will be posted to /Event, which are public. Follow Strum here, or on AIS (via free MarineTraffic app). CORE-CREW
Defined as Regular-Crew that can commit to more than 75% of any Strum /Series. Core-Crew are expected to contribute to preparing Strum pre/post regattas, including deliveries. Bonus points for compatibility on & off the water. Since Strum is primarily an off-shore race boat campaigning for VanIsle360, Hawaii & Mexico type races, we require a valid Safety At Sea certificate. There are currently 2 spots open. Apply within. REGULAR-CREW
Defined as crew familiar with Strum that can only commit to less than 75% of any Strum /Series. We like to have crew familiar with Strum's articulating sprit and water-ballast system, which allows us to race competitively. If you can only commit to a few races due to other boat/work commitments, this option is for you. Preference given to those with a valid Safety At Sea certificate.

SAFETY AT SEA (SAS)
Safety At Sea certification is a 2 day, @$500 course offered in Canada and the USA, valid for 5 years. Most distance & off-shore Race Committees require a percentage (30-100%) of crew to have a valid Safety At Sea certificate (Canadian or USA) in order for the yacht to be eligible for registration/participation (Pac-Cup, RTC, Salish Sea, Straits, Swiftsure, TransPac, Vic-Maui). Since Strum is primarily an offshore race boat, SAS is required for all core-crew. Plus, if you are serious about offshore racing &/or cruising, we recommend it. We also favour any available +4 crew with a valid SAS certificate, over those that do not have this. Search "safety at sea" for more details. REFITS

CONCEPT
Strum was built as an evolution of the concept behind the Riptide 35 and 44. She is a high performance long course racing boat with comfortable cruising accommodations. Her light displacement and water ballast make her capable of 24 hour runs in excess of 350 NM and cruising speeds under power of 10+ kts. Water ballast, non-overlapping jibs and asymmetrical spinnakers enable her to be sailed at a high percentages of her maximum performance with a minimum number of crew.
-Paul Bieker
DESIGNER
Paul Bieker of Seattle, Washington USA. BUILDER
(Ian) Franklin Yachts in Christchurch, New Zealand. All laminates are vacuum bagged epoxy wet laminate. Cores are cross-linked PVC. Hull and deck have e-glass/carbon outside skins for additional impact resistance and carbon inside skins for minimum weight. Kevlar is introduced into the hull forward to increase damage tolerance. All interior panels are built from lightweight composite panels cut out to accurate computer patterns for minimum weight and minimum waste. The spars were built by Matrix Masts, NZ (later Hall Spars, now Southern Spars). Original Navtec PBO standing rigging was replaced with Future Fibres ECThree in 2022. The keel is fabricated steel and lifts in a trunk. Custom cradel to protect lifting keel while in dry-dock. CHARACTERISTICS

RVYC’s 2025 Fleet Prize Giving:
New Date: Wednesday, November 5
Dear Keelboat Community,
Royal Vancouver Yacht Club is pleased to invite you to this year’s Fleet Prize Giving, taking place on Wednesday, November 5.
We are excited to celebrate what has been an outstanding 2025 sailing season — spanning Wednesday Night Racing, the One Design Series, the Martin 242 North Americans, the NYYC Invitational Cup, the 6 Metre Worlds, and many other notable events. Our sailors have delivered exceptional performances across all disciplines, and this evening offers the opportunity to come together and recognize those achievements.
As one of RVYC’s most enduring traditions, the Fleet Prize Giving is an evening to honour excellence on the water, reflect on the past season, and look ahead to 2026. We encourage you to bring your families and crew to share in a night of celebration, connection, and community.
