Hurricane Melissa has devastated areas of Jamaica which will have ripple effects on the whole island. As dancers who love Dancehall it is important to give back to the culture, people and island which has influenced and brought us so much joy and mentorship

Femme Gone Wild Dancehall is committing 100% of class proceeds (for all of November) to be donated to Jamaican relief efforts.

The sessions run:
Thursdays 7:30-9:00pm
The Dance Centre
677 Davie Street, Vancouver BC

Hello! It’s been a minute and I would like to introduce myself to those who are new here.

My name is Kirby, I’m a dance artist, visual artist, and dance company owner with a deep love for Dancehall. My mission is to create safe, respectful spaces where everyone can grow, express, and move freely: free from bullying, harassment, or sexual misconduct.

I believe in teaching with integrity, joy, and respect for the art form, for each other, and for ourselves. 💛 Let’s dance with purpose and power.

Soooo, I was gone for a while….. took a teaching sabbatical.

I disappeared. I flew away. I basically dipped fast and turned my back on my life for a while… I told (and cried) to some people in person, but overall just left… and didn’t explain, I am ready to share now.

My sabbatical lasted 4 months, but when it started there was high possibly it would be indefinite and I announced to my Femme Gone Wild participants that I was closing shop and I (naturally) mourned ending my teaching career. I truly wasn’t sure if I would come back. But guess what, bi***es, I came back today!

Why did I leave? My Mum fell ill and was rapidly declining. I wasn’t sure if I was going to help her, or say goodbye to her as she died. She turned out (thankfully) to have hydrocephalus: Excess fluid in the brain which puts pressure on areas controlling memory, motor-skills and bladder. My Mum lost her mind, and her body turned against her and it was excruciating to watch her crumble both physically and mentally, but there is a surgery which can manage it.

Just a quick note while in my feelings

Thank you.
I see and feel the genuine kindness, gentleness, and well-wishing vibes of so many people and I am forever grateful.

Sure, I do sometimes find myself running off on little adventures which can turn dark and I’ve experienced malicious people, but for the vast majority - ya’ll are cool 😎.

You are not adding harm to others, nor trying to squash joy, nor deflate confidence in moving toward goals. Instead you are adding pleasantries and show genuine happiness for good news for others, and leave people a bit better off than you found first encountered them. I see it. I see it all around me. So, thank you. Those are invaluable qualities and so incredibly appreciated.

Sometimes a fleeting depressive moment births beauty. Who woulda thought 🤷🏻‍♀️😂
