The 2026 FIFA World Cup is getting closer. It’s a great chance to look back at the people who helped put Canadian soccer on the world stage. ⚽🌎
Werner Winsemann remains the only Canadian referee selected to officiate at a FIFA World Cup, serving at the 1974 tournament and representing Canada on the game’s biggest stage.
His impact on soccer in BC and across the country continues to be recognized today.

With the FIFA World Cup just one month away, it is a good time to look back at the moments that helped build Canadian soccer into what it is today.
One of the most significant comes from George Pakos, a Victoria-based amateur who played a decisive role in Canada’s qualification for Mexico 1986.
It remains one of the defining chapters in Canadian soccer history, built on moments that few saw coming but no one has forgotten.

BC Soccer is deeply saddened by the passing of Charlie Cuzzetto.
Charlie has dedicated over 50 years to the growth of futsal in BC and across Canada. He served as President of Futsal Canada and played a key role in its affiliation with Canada Soccer.
He also contributed to the game through his leadership with BC Soccer, serving as both a Director and President.
In honour of Charlie’s lasting impact on the game, BC Soccer has renamed the Men’s Futsal Provincial Cup in his honour.
Charlie's contributions to the game will never be forgotten. Our thoughts are with his family.
