There are 4 movements of the spine: flexion, extension, lateral flexion, and rotation. Thoracic rotation and extension are linked, and both important for full shoulder movements.
The side lying stretch improves thoracic mobility, specifically targeting thoracic rotation! Try this exercise pre- and post- activity.

Did you know that the spine is composed of 5 regions: cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacrum, and coccyx. There are 24 vertebrae and 4 curvatures of the spinal column. It is a flexible column that supports the head, neck, and body and allows for their movements.
