"Vancouver City Council, Rowing Canada, Rowing BC, and Vancouver West End MLA Spencer Chandra-Herbert have all sided with the rowing club, and formalized their opposition in letters to the port."

SAVE STANLEY PARK WATERS CAMPAIGN: 2020 UPDATE - Save Stanley Park Waters 07/05/2020

Hi everyone, important message follows:

Thank you immensely for your support on the Save Stanley Park Waters Campaign. The official public consultation period on this project is almost over... you only have until *JULY 7* to complete the online survey. This survey is being conducted by the Yacht Club, and all results are submitted to the Port of Vancouver and will factor into their decision. Please help us by going to https://savestanleyparkwaters.ca and following the instructions to the survey.

It only takes a few minutes! Make sure you get to the end of the survey as the important questions are at the end.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts, once again, for your support.

Sincerely,

Coal Harbour Preservation Committee,
Vancouver Rowing Club

SAVE STANLEY PARK WATERS CAMPAIGN: 2020 UPDATE - Save Stanley Park Waters The Royal Vancouver Yacht Club wants to take over a public waterway… so they can park more luxury yachts in the waters around Stanley Park. Help us save the public waterway around Stanley Park!

Monday morning, 6 am. The rowers come out for the first row of the week. Smells of an oil slick and diesel fumes hover in the air as motor yachts start up. Only YOU can STOP THIS from GETTING WORSE, but time is running out July 7th. You don't even have to get off the couch to do it. Grab your phone or laptop, go to https://savestanleyparkwaters.ca and fill in the survey. Tell the yacht club and especially the Port of Vancouver that you do not want increased pollution caused by more yachts in Stanley Park. Call 311 or use VanConnect and ask the City of Vancouver and Vancouver Park Board to “get off the couch” and actively oppose this atrocity. Vancouver City Council and in particular Pete Fry for Vancouver as well as Vancouver West End NDP, Spencer Chandra Herbert MLA have spoken up against it, and we hope they will do so again now in the Port's stakeholder consultation. The Vancouver Park Board wants less cars in Stanley Park, so why aren’t they more vocal in lobbying the Port against allowing more motor yachts. All of YOU, stand up for our right to keep the waters off Stanley Park for the public to enjoy.

First day back on the water, physically distancing in singles. Thank you Rowing BC and Rowing Canada Aviron for providing lots of support and guidance along the way to make this possible.

06/12/2020

Rowing will be back soon in Stanley Park. Deep cleaning of the club and equipment happening as we speak and the sport will follow all the provincial guide lines. Singles first and later household doubles guarantee physical distancing and are allowed for now until the province opens up more.

This was in early March 2020. It's been a while, and you have not seen these sleek crew boats on the Stanley Park Waters since then. But with Phase 2 of BC's slow reopening underway and Phase 3 on the horizon, the Vancouver Rowing Club is busy preparing for a safe, slow reopening in small boats and small groups. So those crew boats still won't be on the water for a while longer.

Yachts versus rowers: In Vancouver this is class warfare - Macleans.ca 11/21/2019

We were pleased to see a correction issued to the Maclean's article that came out last week:

"CORRECTION, Nov. 20, 2019: The original version of this post said the Vancouver Park Board supported the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club’s proposal; while the park board had supported an earlier project to replace the club’s boat shelters, it has not taken a position on the current proposal to expand the yacht club’s water lot."

"It’s like a community daycare boarded up so developers can build a luxury condominium... Rowers say a bigger yacht zone will cripple their operation, making it too dangerous for a diverse population of athletes to enjoy a rare urban waterway accessible to those who arrive on foot, bikes or bus."

Maclean's has the latest in our fight against the Yacht Club's expansion, which threatens the future of rowing in Coal Harbour.

The Vancouver Rowing Club has been here since 1886. Rowers from Vancouver Rowing Club won Canada's first Olympic gold medal in 1956 – and several more since. Today, our club is a non-profit, volunteer-based organization, open and accessible to all. We train hundreds of new rowers every summer with our affordable learn-to-row classes, and our junior program is the only option to row in Vancouver for students in the public school system. Our mission is to support amateur sport, and we are proud to offer low fees and have bursaries available to those with financial need.
