Free Moorage for 6 M242’s at the Gibsons Canadian Championships

The M242 Canadian Championship organizers in Gibsons have been working on a variety of topics over the past 6 months, and one of them had to do with arranging free moorage at the floating dinghy school raft that is always in place in past years in a very sheltered location from east, south, and west winds: see the red square in the photo below re its usual location.

As a result, free moorage for 6 M242’s has been arranged and David Guy (Organizing Committee member and a 242 owner) has asked our Fleet to reach out to the first 6 non-Gibsons Registered boats and see if they want to take up this offer. (3 Registered boats are from Gibsons and have their own permanent slips)

He’s arranging for a volunteer to run a RVYC-donated whaler back and forth to the Gibsons Landing dock (or the Marina) each morning and afternoon.

The additional speedy option is for the 242’s at the floating dock to pool resources and shuttle folks back and forth on Martins, and use the whaler to help out with first-of-day and last-boat-at-end-of-day shuttling, at a minimum.

As such, we’ve contacted the current Registered boats on the list and at this point only 1 has asked to stay at the floating dock (Ken Holland), which leaves 5 open slots.

You have to Register for the event (https://www.scycsailing.ca/regattaentrypage) to claim a slot, and then text Michael Clements at (778) 968-1713 to let him know you want one and he’ll inform the Committee to add you to the list.

Registration is open for the Canadian Championship in Gibsons

The event is on the July 18/19 weekend. So far 6 Martin 242’s have Registered for the event with a 7th pending this weekend and we are expecting 15-20 based on preliminary conversations with interested skippers in BC and Washington State.

A couple of notes about moorage at the event:

1. Competitors must arrange moorage through either of the two Gibsons marinas.

2. The Gibsons Landing Harbor Authority (public) Marina has space set aside for competitor boats, but the Gibsons (private) Marina space is dependent on how many folks take their boats cruising that weekend, because they don’t have transient space set aside. As such they have a Waitlist for July.

3. When contacting the GLHA marina ensure that you specify that you are part of the Sunshine Coast Yacht Club reservation as opposed to saying you’re with the Gary White Memorial Regatta.

4. The rates between the 2 marinas are almost the same: GLHA is $2.40 per foot per night plus GST and GM is $2.60 plus GST.

5. Contact info for both Marinas are on the main page of the regatta sub-website.

6. Motherships have the choice of staying at either Marina, or anchoring out: there’s lots of anchoring options off the Gibsons waterfront as well as the Plumper Cove Marine Park on nearby Keats Island.

*Special Event* Don Martin has agreed to give a presentation at the regatta on the history of the M242 on Friday night, July 17, 6:30PM at The Bay Gibsons (https://www.thebaygibsons.ca)

Hi everyone,

We have 20 attendees for this coming Saturday the 11th, including 3 from Victoria, and 1 from Gibsons, and have now stopped taking applications as of 6pm on Tuesday. We may run another Clinic next year.

This day clinic will consist of:

10 - 11:30am - Dockside instruction for everyone using a couple of boats pointed downwind. We will also discuss optimal deck layouts, systems, pole storage options, setting the pole and crew positioning for flying the spinnaker, gybing and hoisting/ dowsing, and communication between the foredeck person and the Tactician/Skipper.

Regional Martin 242 Class Update

Hi everyone,

This was the update sent around the Pacific Northwest recently as an Xmas card insert for about 100 people:

2025 was a watershed year for the Regional Martin 242 Class. We saw the largest number of M242's at a North Americans in the past 20 years (38) and could easily have had another 5-10 on the line if a few more regular racers had been able to attend.

We are now the dominant One Design Keelboat Class on the West Coast of North America by a factor of 2-3 times the size of other One Design Keelboat Classes (J/70, Melges 24, Stars, VX-1's, Dragons, etc.). There are 125 boats in total on the West Coast and growing via imports from the Midwest and East Coast of which 90 are in BC, Washington State, Alberta, and Oregon.

87 boats have changed hands in the past ~9 years in the Pacific Northwest, which is about 10 per year, and our "Active Race-Boat" percentage is steadily rising as a result.

New boat clusters are continually developing – new regions in the past 5 years or so include Gibsons (BC), Comox (BC), Port Moody (BC), Sequim (WA State) and Nelson (Kootenay Lake Region, BC).

Starting in 2023 Victoria, BC, has resurged with additional active M242's, building on the success of the Orcas Island cluster, and in October 2024 appointed the first-ever Fleet Captain for Fleet 2, namely Mike Cannon. They now have 11 boats in Victoria, and there's a lineup of buyers looking for competitive boats in the PNW Region: this is a great problem to have, and the inventory of unused boats will get steadily whittled down.

We also have a large and very active volunteer base that keeps everything humming along, so if you see an area that interests you, reach out to your local Fleet Captain or one of the volunteers to see how you can pitch in. Many hands make light work.
