Gliding gracefully through the depths, the wolf eel is one of BC’s most fascinating underwater residents. Despite its name, it isn’t a true eel but a fish — its pectoral fins are a clear giveaway. Wolf eels can often be found along the rocky reefs and kelp-covered pinnacles of BC’s coast, from the Strait of Georgia to Haida Gwaii. They prefer the cold, dark waters where they can tuck themselves into crevices and rocky dens, sometimes sharing these spaces with a lifelong mate. The males, like the one seen here, are known for their distinctive features — broad heads, powerful jaws, and mottled patterns that help them blend into the seabed. A Pacific sea nettle (Chrysaora fuscenscens) floating near Port Hardy. These jellyfish are most often seen in late summer, when warm currents carry them up the coast as far as Alaska. They play an important role in the ecosystem, feeding on plankton, small fish, and other jellyfish, while in turn providing food for sea turtles, seabirds, and larger fish. Though their sting can be painful to humans, it isn’t considered dangerous. What a treat to encounter this 8-9 foot Six Gill shark on tonight's dive. 🥰🦈

This was a dive I will never forget. I think you can tell by my breathing that I was freaking out at the sight of this juvenile bluntnose six gill shark. I have been diving every single day this summer, looking for one, and the proof is in the pudding! We found him a few hours before the sunset at approximately 60 to 70 feet and hung out with her for approximately 10 minutes before he cruised into the darkness. #shark #sixgill #bc #howesound #gopro #dfo #marinebiology #scuba #scubadiving #ikelite #sony

Let's go find some Giant Pacific Octopuses together!

When the big Octopus comes out for a stroll. 🌌👾 A lot of the time when you see a large Giant Pacific Octopus while diving, it's inside the saftey of a crack or under a boulder. Don't get me wrong, seeing and Octopus inside its Ben is a delightful experience. However encountering one out in the open as it walks around hunting for food is a whole other type of experience and this is partially why I love night dives so much. Many of my memorable encounters with these large Cephalopods have been in the hours after the sun has gone down.
