May 16-22 is Safe Boating Week! Our friends at the Canadian Safe Boating Council have five important points they want to make this year. Here they are with a lens for Jericho style craft.

🦺 Wear your Lifejacket or Personal Floatation Device – If you’re not wearing your PFD when you fall in the water it can’t help you. Wearing your PFD while on the water is as sensible as wearing a seatbelt in your road vehicle.

🚫 Boat Sober – The same laws that apply to drinking and driving apply to boating while under the influence. Alcohol is a factor in 40% of boating related deaths in Canada. Keep the alcohol for time ashore after you’ve been on the water.

📖 Take a Course – More knowledge brings more competence and pleasure. Learning from an accredited source gives you best practices and the knowledge to be safe right away. Our school partners at Jericho are ready to teach you new skills.

✅ Be Prepared, You and Your Vessel – Do you have a paddle, bailer, whistle and buoyant heaving line? Have you performed a pre-launch check? Pins, shackles, shrouds, lines, rudders, centreboards, masts, mast steps, mast seals, centreboard wells, buoyancy compartment(s), b**g plugs, and hatch covers should all be checked before every launch.

🥶 Be Cold Water Safe – Even in 20°C water the body will lose more heat than it can generate leading to hypothermia. Being properly dressed for immersion in local waters is a key strategy for comfort and enjoyment let alone survival.

For more information on safe boating practices here in English Bay feel free to sign up for our English Bay Safety Seminar. It’s free for everyone. Our next one will be in person on June 1 at 1900H. RSVP at the Jericho office 604.224.4177 or [email protected]

This past Saturday 61 competitors participated in the PNW ORCA Winter series race #2 hosted by the Jericho Paddling Club at the Jericho Sailing Centre. A chill was certainly in the air, and the water around 6 degrees Celsius but calm seas, light air, and the sunshine made for beautiful paddling, helping to warm hearts and keep everyone happy. Huge thanks to the Jericho Paddling Club and Jericho Rescue volunteers for all their help and support.

Redouane is often down at the Centre practicing kayak rolls – even in winter! Here he is performing a roll using a short paddle on a cool January afternoon while the fog rolls in over Stanley Park. Off-season virtual racing is back Tuesday nights at Jericho.

Are you interested in learning how to race? Do you want to perfect your strategy and tactics on the water? Do you want to race, but it's too cold out there?

The UBC Sailing Club has the pleasure to introduce the Wegatta Regatta workshop and virtual race series! We meet in the Jericho Member’s Lounge every Tuesday night (6 pm), go over sailing rules and strategy and then apply them during Virtual Regatta races. This virtual championship will run until the end of March.

This event is free and open to every Jericho member—no need to have any experience racing (or even sailing). The game can be played on a laptop or a phone—please create a Virtual Regatta Inshore account (https://www.virtualregatta.com/inshore-game/) before you join, and go through the tutorial. If you are planning to play on your phone, you'll need to download the app. Our first session will be on Tuesday, Jan 13th, and there will be some cookies! If you are interested or have some questions, you can directly join us for one of the sessions, or send a message to [email protected].
