As both a rock singer and crooner, I of course have many influence, but none have been bigger than Mark Lanegan... who sadly passed on to Fielder's Green two years ago, along with his perfect storm of vocal chords :(

However, influences can also inspire, and when Putin invade Ukraine the next day, followed by the late Anthony Bourdain's buddy José Andrés heading over to Kyiv to feed refugees through his World Central Kitchen charity, it gave me an idea for a tribute/fundraiser based around Lanegan's extensive genre-crossing catalogue. At the time, I was proposing something food truck related + music for late June to coincide with Bourdain's birthday. As with most things that emanate from this ol' overcharged thinkin' brain, the timing wasn't quite right and the support - particularly from out east in Ottawa where it should've had the support - wasn't really there.

But there are lots of lessons wherever you want to find them, and Lanegan's songs have plenty of them to offer... he was a baseball nut like me, and in the last two years I've learned how to croon by approaching singers and songs like pitch selection over 9-innings. But that's a different side of the game as some lessons involve hitting and knowing when to square up on a fastball in the zone and when to wait just long enough on a hanging curve.

So to allude to a Sinatra song about clowns made famous in a Simpsons episode (!), we'll see about "losing my timing, this late in my career"...
