Is Your Next Boat Going Electric?

Electric vehicles are now common on our roads, and electric propulsion systems are becoming increasingly visible at boat shows and in marine applications. But what does this shift really mean for recreational boaters? Is electric propulsion a practical alternative to diesel for cruising in the Pacific Northwest?

This session is not a sales presentation. Instead, it will provide a clear and practical overview of electric boat propulsion systems. The discussion will cover motors and batteries, revisit the fundamentals of electricity, and explain how electric powertrains function in a marine environment.

The goal is to equip members with the knowledge needed to assess whether electric propulsion could be a viable option for their own boating needs. Particular attention will be given to charging considerations and the unique challenges and opportunities facing Pacific Northwest boaters.

Because the underlying physics applies equally to boats and cars, the insights shared may also inform your next vehicle purchase.

The presentation will be delivered by Andreas Truckenbrodt, a Vancouver Rowing Club member from Nanaimo. Andreas previously led development of electric, hybrid, and hydrogen fuel cell powertrains at Mercedes-Benz, bringing extensive industry experience to this timely and practical discussion.

The talk will be on Thursday, April 23, beginning at 7:30 pm in the Trophy Lounge. Doors open at 7:00 pm. Please pre-register below, tickets are $10 per attendee.
