This most prestigious of sporting names was founded in 1874, just 2 years after William Hardy began his gunsmithing workshop. The company exuded quality from the start and within only a few short years was world renowned for excellence and innovative ideas, many of the ideas are still in use today. Hardy Bros were the inventors and pioneers of planing machines for the production of split cane (bamboo) fishing rods, gone were the days of hand planing the sections which took many,many hours. With the planing machines came also the highest of quality and exact tapers for the split cane fly fishing rods the company was so famed for, indeed in the hey day of split cane production the company was producing 10,000 fishing rods per month, a far cry from all the other manufacturers, indeed Hardy Bros started to produce rods and reels for many other tackle dealers and suppliers. Due to the vast numbers of fishing rods and reels produced and with such precision and quality many survived, very many indeed. It is quite easy to find bargains on line (I have found many), just be careful of what you buy, a fishing rod requiring light restoration will serve you well for many years, the reels are almost bomb proof and again are very plentiful. This custom rod was a two year development project with my Rodsmith friend here in Canada. We devised this one off taper which is hollow built and a mid to tip action. As you can see the blank is nicely flamed here and there. After my friend had built the blank we decided to impregnate the blank rather than varnish...it is an excellent method of protecting the raw material, it is traditional and also looks the part. I fitted the cork rings obtained from my grower in Europe and then turned the handle to my desired diameter of 25 mm (1 inch). I then whipped on all the guides to include the two 1950s new old stock H&H agate butt guides and a matching tip top guide, I do try and buy all new old stock items when ever they become available in the UK. The intermediate guides are also made by Hopkins and Holloway of England. The ferrules are made by Super Z and are of reinforced design. This is a most traditional looking rod with a crisp modern action and is a 6 to 10 lbs class rod, she is an absolute joy to use and has landed numerous steelhead to 14 lbs on my local rivers. This rod is a total one off to date, I will make reproduction examples of this rod, please enquire. Sorry for the poor quality photos, I am a rod builder, I am clearly not a photographer.

Hello all, have just received a 1920s 30s bamboo rod from Aggie Fritz for some very light restoration work......this incredible rod has almost not been fished, this little delight only requires ferrule work to make fishable again.

In a poor way, but well worth restoring, especially as the rod has been in the same family from new.

We would like to thank the latest people for liking the page, we are growing nicely in numbers, photos of the latest rod restoration to follow soon.

The 1940s restoration is going well. We had to wait for some custom parts to arrive, these are now all here and the rod is in her final stages....I don't want to give her up, she is stunning, she will last another 50 or 60 years until the next restoration is done by the current owners grandchildren (To be).
