Hi neighbours,
You may have seen the news that Hastings Community Centre renewal is part of the City’s latest investment announcement.
On April 7th, a special meeting of the Vancouver Park Board passed a recommendation to commit $400 million in the next capital plan period (2027-2030) for the renewal of three community centres, namely Hastings, Kensington and Renfrew. The 2022 Community Centre Strategy Report, which guides Vancouver’s future investment in community centres, and was developed after extensive public consultation, identifies these three centres as the first priorities for renewal.
On April 8th, Mayor Sim announced that the City will commit the same $400 million for community centre renewals and renovations for the 2027-2030 period, but he named five centres, namely Hastings, Kensington, Roundhouse, Kerrisdale and Dunbar. Only the first two are consistent with the recommendations in the Community Centre Strategy.
The Community Centre Strategy was created to avoid the situation where politicians would pick and choose centre renewals for their own reasons rather than on an evidence based, objective set of criteria, including but not limited to: condition of the building, seismic rating, recreation equity, service gaps, and neighbourhood growth indicators. Once you start picking major infrastructure investments for reasons other than credible evidence based research, you open the door to accusations of unfairness and special treatment.
Vancouver City Council is planning to hold a public meeting on Wednesday, April 22nd, to hear from the public about the Mayor's proposed capital plan. We plan to continue advocating that the City follows the existing Park Board Community Centre Strategy, and invest based on need, not on votes.
