Freaky Creeky is a pretty great example of what makes the Vernon area so special: incredible trails, beautiful lakes, big views and a trail-running community that brings people together from both near and far.

September is here, and apparently we have decided to pack a LOT into it.
Freaky Creeky is just around the corner, Fall Clinic starts next week, we’re already looking ahead to our Seasons End Trail Run at Predator Ridge, and we have a great opportunity to share from one of our collaborating health professionals.

👀 Did you know we have a kids trail race the same day as Freaky Creeky?!

This is suited to let kids 12 & under RUN WILD in Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park. Sneaky Creeky needs no introduction as it has been so well attended, but just in care YOU haven’t hear of it - here’s the deets:

Sneaky Creeky serves up just enough of a challenge for the kids! Our fantastic volunteers ensure they are kept safe and en route for the duration of their 2.7km adventure, but adults are also encouraged to join them. This is a valuable introduction to trail running and exploring that we pride ourselves on offering the next generation of trail blazers.

In contrast to our kids event, we have a variety of distances for Freaky Creeky which makes it a great intro to trail running for BIG KIDS TOO! (Ya, that’s you). There is no lack of challenge for each distance, and the terrain of each distance varies which makes it a new adventure to participate in each year.

Hit Vernon’s trails with your four-legged running buddy and stay safe out there this summer!

A few tips to keep both you AND your pup happy on the trails:

Watch for rattlesnakes — stay toward the centre of the trail and keep your dog close, especially through rocky and grassy areas.

Beat the heat — head out early in the morning and avoid the hottest part of the day.

Bring extra water — if you’re thirsty, chances are your pup is too! Don’t rely on creeks or lakes for drinking water.

Check the ground temperature— hot pavement, rocks and exposed trails can be tough on paws.

Know your dog’s limits — dogs can overheat quickly. Slow down, take breaks and watch for excessive panting or fatigue.

Keep dogs leashed where required — and keep them under control even in off-leash areas.

Give wildlife space — deer, bears, coyotes and other wildlife call these trails home.

Check those paws — rocks, sticks, thorns and hot ground can cause cuts or irritation. Give paws a quick check when you’re done.

Do a tick check — check both yourself and your pup after running through grass and brush.

Pack it in, pack it out— yes, that includes the p**p bag!

Yield to other trail users — runners, hikers, bikers and equestrians are all out enjoying the trails.

Carry the basics — water, a collapsible dog bowl, leash, p**p bags and a few basic first-aid supplies are easy additions to your running pack.

Most importantly, have fun! Vernon has some pretty incredible trails to explore, and they’re even better with your favourite four-legged training partner.
