The importance of pause.

In horse training we're often thinking about what we can DO and what we can achieve in our brief windows of time with our horses more than what we're NOT doing. But the pause is where the training happens. The pause is where we can mark the moment as "Yes! That was it!" it can also be the place where we can take a breath and decide how we want to respond to the situation before our reactions get the best of us.

Rory has taught me a lot about the pause. When we first started he could not stand still under saddle. He was constantly fidgeting and looking around and agitated and this would in turn make me feel agitated too. So I started practicing. Sometimes it would only be a second or two, other times it would be a bit longer but together we slowly learned how to pause together. He also taught me to pause when my reactions would show up. He is the kind of horse that will often go several days being fine with something and then one day decide that the whole world is completely different and absolutely terrifying. Obviously this is a frustrating experience and I didn't want to react to him, so there was a lot of pausing and breathing until I could be with him in his agitation and not get flustered or frustrated in myself. Believe me, it's not an easy feat! To this day, there are still moments where you will see me stop whatever I'm doing, lean on one leg and breathe - and 9 times out of 10 I am pausing so I can give my nervous system time to let the energy work its way through my body and allow me to respond instead of react or get quick.

So this week I encourage you to notice and appreciate the pause! Whether its in rewarding your horse for a day well done or to bring your body back to the present.

Are you centred before you get on your horse?

The truth is that being a horse person means your life is always just a little chaotic! Or maybe that's just me! Whether it's juggling vet bills or making sure you have enough hay for the winter or just trying to keep up with work and a social life, the reality is that we can often show up at the barn a little frazzled and overwhelmed before we even get out of the car. These are some ways that I like to get myself recentred and grounded before I catch my horse so that I can be as present as possible while we train.

🧘‍♀️Box breathing (breathe in for four beats, breathe out for four beats, repeat minimum 4 times.) - this helps start activating your parasympathetic state and get you focusing on your breath.

🧘‍♀️ Counting steps - Counting as you walk in a simple 1-2 fashion does two things: It forces you to speak which means you can't hold your breath (which is very helpful when you're concentrating😋). It also makes you start to walk in a rhythm and slow your body down as you find a simple rhythm and tempo and this in turn will help your horse find you and get into a flow.

🧘‍♀️Visualization - Honestly, visualization has made insane changes in my horse training!! I've had some mind blowing sessions because I did visualization before my ride. The important factor I find is also imagining how it would FEEL to have this amazing ride, what would your horse feel like and then make that amazing positive feeling get super intense until you feel like you are overflowing with excitement and joy at this perfect ride. Honestly, the horses pick up on it so much and it can really do wonders.

If you are like me and struggle to start visualizing without getting stuck in the what ifs and tiny details, I highly recommend using the Hypno-Ride guided visualizations! They are audio visualization guides that are made specifically for horse riders by horse riders. They have four audio options: Daily Meditation, Centering Before Horse Work, Confidence Building, And Prepping For A Horse Show. I use them all the time and love them so much!
