A few reasons why you should be clipping when you ride:

☆ The biggest advantage to wearing spin shoes is the fact that you can engage more muscles and get that “push ‘n’ pull” motion that I’m always talking about! The pull allows you to recruit more muscles; that means you’ll be strengthening not only your quads (push), but also your hamstrings, glutes, and hip flexors (pull). That means clipping in will provide you with greater efficiency in the transfer of power and a more balanced use between quads and hamstrings.
☆ Being able to push ‘n’ pull on the pedals will also help you create smoother, more fluid pedal strokes, reducing the risk of knee injuries and making it easier to climb.
☆ The stiff soles on spin shoes stop your feet from wrapping around the pedals, providing you with increased stability and more effective power transfer. You are also less likely to lose control of the pedals or fall off the bike! 
☆ Clipping in helps maintain proper joint alignment, especially for the knees! This means no knee buckling or bowing, and a safer and more efficient pedal stroke. 

Bottom line: Clipping in will give you a more efficient, more powerful; and safer overall ride when you're on the bike.
