Congratulations to all players, coaches, referees, volunteers and families who helped make the weekend such a success.

The KickOff Cup was filled with great soccer, outstanding sportsmanship, teamwork and memorable moments on the field.

We are proud to see so many players competing hard, supporting one another and representing their teams with pride.

Thank you to everyone who participated and helped create a fun and positive start to the season!

Too many adults forget what this is really about.
It’s not elite football.
It’s not pressure.
It’s not perfection.
It’s kids learning, growing, and loving the game.
Are we helping that… or getting in the way?

I went to watch a U10 grassroots game last night.

No affiliation, just there to support one player and what I saw…

• Two teams.
• Mixed ability across both.
• Some players were already in academies.
• Others just starting out.

Both coaches rotated players, everyone played, and every single child had a role.

• No constant shouting.
• No over-instruction.

Just:

“Well done for trying that.”
“Great dribble.”
“Did you see your teammate?”

One team had stronger players, and that coach didn’t just use it for his advantage, he challenged those players with:

• Different positions.
• Individual targets.

The game stayed competitive, not because of ability or lack of effort, but because of how it was managed.

One moment that stayed with me was a player called Jack. He was recently new to the team and also new to playing football. Every touch he had there was genuine encouragement, patience and support from his team-mates.

Misplaced pass? “Unlucky, Jack.” High fives. A corner that led to a goal? “WELL DONE JACK!” Celebrating like he’d scored it himself.

By the end of the game, he wasn’t “the new player.” He most probably felt part of it. I can only imagine how he felt walking away from that pitch, probably ten feet tall.

That’s the point every child played, every player contributed, and everyone mattered.

• Two volunteer coaches.
• Straight from work.

Both created a fun, inclusive, competitive and enjoyable environment for all, including the parents.

Kudos 👏👏

Is your child’s team being taught to build out of the back? Or are they being told to just kick it long?

Are defenders encouraged to dribble, pass, and solve problems? Or just get it wide and send it up the field?

A few years ago, youth soccer added buildout lines. The idea was simple: “Give players more time and space to receive the ball, and actually learn how to play.”

But what do we actually see?
-Goalies launching the ball long
-Defenders getting it wide and kicking it long
-Teams pushing up to chase second balls
-Hoping for a mistake to score quickly

Even with more space, we’re still avoiding the moment.

I get it. There are times to play safe. There are moments to go long.

But at younger ages we have to ask: Are we helping players improve? Or just helping them avoid mistakes?

Because every time we skip the build-up, we take reps away from:

-The goalkeeper learning to play with their feet
-Defenders learning to handle pressure
-Midfielders learning to connect the game

And those reps matter.

So what are we really prioritizing?
-Development?
-Or winning weekend games?
-Teaching the game?
-Or working around players’ weaknesses?
-Helping players improve even if it means losing games?
-Or winning enough so that parents are happy and so we can recruit other teams’ better players?

Anyone can say “we focus on development and creating a positive environment and pathway for all players” when it’s time for tryouts and to recruit.

But what does it actually look like in games?
