You'd figure that making a Jo would be simple... actually, it is, it's making a straight Jo that's hard.

I've successfully made a few straight Jo's. These are made from White Oak, Padauk and Ya Ya (that's the name of the wood).

I gave Jo made from Ya Ya to one of our younger students as she turned 16. You know how teens are and what they say when you give them instruction... "Ya Ya!" The two White Oak Jo's were made for a couple of other students and the Padauk was kept for myself.

Working with/as Aiki Woodworks, I've started making Bokken and Tanto.

Using various hardwoods like Walnut, Maple, Ash, etc. and trying to create a unique design &/or look with laminations.

Ahhh... uchi deshi life at Aikido of San Leandro is filled with great training and wonderful walks with Sensei and Nicole.
