Victoria Curling Club to Donate Land, Building and Assets to CurlManitoba
Winnipeg, MB: Based on member feedback at the Special General Meeting where the decision to cease operations was made, the Victoria Curling Club Board of Directors has decided to donate the land, building and remaining assets to CurlManitoba. Upon sale of the land and building, CurlManitoba will implement a plan to invest the proceeds in the future of the sport of curling in Manitoba, including a significant contribution in the name of the Victoria Curling Club in the Curling for Life Endowment Fund.
“It was very clear from the members they wanted the closure of the Vic to benefit curling in the province” says VCC President John Muir. “The Curling for Life Endowment Fund will ensure the legacy of the Vic will live on for ever.”
“Gifts to The Curling For Life Endowment Fund are pooled and permanently invested,” says Craig Baker, Executive Director of CurlManitoba. “The Capital is never spent and the Fund generates annual revenues, for ever. The yearly revenue from the Fund will be spent on scholarships, and the development and promotion of curling in our province.”
“There is a sort of symmetry to this gift,” says Muir. “The club began its life 95 years ago as the CP Rail Curling Club, and only became the Victoria after CP gave the club to its members. That gift has benefited hundreds of curlers who’ve called the Vic home over the years. Although the closing of the club has been a difficult decision, our members and executive take great pride in knowing it will help support the future of curling for tens of thousands of Manitobans for the foreseeable future.”
The Victoria Curling Club will be hosting a final send off event to allow former members to visit the club one last time and collect memorabilia they have a connection to. Things like past president, club championship, and MCA Bonspiel event winner pictures will be available, as well as provincial championship banners, providing a connection can be proven. We also encourage all former rental leagues to ensure they have removed their trophies from our trophy case.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Victoria Curling Club to Cease Operations
Winnipeg, MB: After 95 years on William Avenue in Winnipeg, the Members, Board of Directors and Executive have come to the difficult decision to terminate the normal operation of the Victoria Curling Club (VCC). Following the distribution of the assets as per the VCC constitution, the formal dissolution of the company and entity known as the Victoria Curling Club Limited will occur.
“Although the Club owns the building and land outright, has money in the bank and is currently not in any debt, based on our current and projected membership numbers, debt is not far away,” says VCC President John Muir.
“With no loans or line of credit available, we couldn’t operate in good conscience next season knowing we might not have the cash flow to operate the entire season, or that any kind of expense - an ice plant failure, an ice house heater failure, or a blown club house furnace would surely shutter the club mid season. Our current members and ice renters have been with us for a long time, and they have been good to us. We feel the best way to be good to them is to give them plenty of time to find alternative arrangements for the next curling season.”
As the VCC owns the building and the land, there will be substantial assets available to be distributed as per the VCC constitution, which stipulates all assets must go to a “Not-for-Profit” organization or a registered charity.
It is the wish of the VCC Members, Board of Directors and Executive that the remaining assets be invested in the sport of curling. Although the club will no longer exist to serve curlers in Winnipeg, its 95 years as a facility over, it will provide the continued support the sport needs to allow its legacy to live on for another 100 years.
The VCC is exploring all options to ensure the gift to the sport of curling is as great as possible.
